Dr. Mitchell describes himself as, “A proud member of Peachtree Community Health Center in Murphy,” and he is committed to serve the poor in rural Western North Carolina.
After Bowdoin College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Mitchell did his internal medicine training in his hometown at Boston City Hospital.
There he met and married his wife Nancy, a nurse and native of Greensboro NC. He came to WNC to begin He medical practice in Murphy as a member of the National Health Service Corps in 1976.
Dr. Mitchell has served on many hospital committees of Murphy Medical Center as well as on the Cherokee County Board of Education. He has assisted in the development and operation of the Hiwassee Pool and Wellness Center, a nearby year-round multi-purpose health and recreation facility.
Dr. Mitchell and Nancy have raised two fine young women, Kate and Anna. He enjoys reading and racquetball, music and dance.
Samantha Thompson, has been a Physician Assistant in Murphy since the fall of 2012.
A native of the area, Samantha graduated magna cum laude from Appalachian State University in 2010 with a degree in Exercise Science with minors in Biology and Psychology. She completed her Physical Assistant Studies at Duke University in August 2012. While attending Duke University she was one of the first students to receive the Primary Care Scholarship.
Samantha enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. In her leisure time she enjoys activities that focus on her family, church involvement, cooking, gardening, and crafts.
A native of the foothills of Western North Carolina, Dee Lowery has a passion for providing care to the underserved in rural NC. She loves the mountains and with the opportunity to work at Peachtree, has made Murphy her home. She graduated from Gardner Webb University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in Spanish. She also earned a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Gardner Webb University in 2018, where she focused her studies on the obstacles faced in rural primary care.
Dee has served in medical missions to both Honduras and Haiti. She has a love of travel and the outdoors. When not working, she is an avid reader. You may also find her playing softball or riding the countryside on her Harley in her free time.
